- The Velvet Rope World Tour was Janet's third concert tour and was in support of her 1997 album The Velvet Rope.
- The show was Janet's first televised concert in the United States, airing on HBO live from New York City's Madison Square Garden on October 11, 1998. The HBO special was nominated for 13 Emmy Awards, and won in the category of Outstanding Technical Direction/Camera/Video for a Special. The recording was released on VHS and DVD in 1999, becoming Janet's first filmed concert to be commercially released.
- During both of the New York City shows, including the one that was televised on HBO and commercially released, rapper Q-Tip made a surprise guest appearance and rapped during "Got 'Til It's Gone."
- During a dance breakdown in "Nasty," Janet sampled Busta Rhymes's "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See."
- Portions of the proceeds from the North American show went to America's Promise, a foundation founded by Colin Powell to help children and youth from all socioeconomic sectors in the United States. Janet made several appearances with Powell to promote the organization, and he also attended one of her shows.
- A live music video for the song "You" directed by David Mallet was filmed during the tour at the shows in Glasgow and Manchester.
- The opening act on the first leg of the tour in Europe was Another Level. During the second leg in North America, Usher was the opening act on the dates between July 9 through October 11; *N Sync was the opening act on the dates between October 14 through October 28; and there was no opening act on October 30 and 31. In South Africa, Lynden David Hall, Boom Shaka, and Doctor Victor were the opening acts. Che Fu was the opening act November 27 through December 3 in New Zealand, both Che Fu and Boyz II Men were the opening acts at the in Auckland, New Zealand concert, Human Nature was the opening act for all of the Australian shows, and 98 Degrees served as opening act at the final concert in Hawaii.
- This was the first time Janet ever toured in Africa.
- The tour grossed an estimated $32.5 million in the United States, $70 million worldwide.
- It is estimated that over 1.4 million people attended the show.
