NOTES: Number Ones is the second greatest hits album from Janet Jackson, released on November 17, 2009 by A&M Records. The album was released under the alternate title The Best in every country except for the United States.
The two-disc collection features a compilation of songs from her albums Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, janet., Design of a Decade 1986/1996, The Velvet Rope, All For You, Damita Jo, 20 Y.O., and Discipline. It was made possible as a joint venture between Universal Music Enterprises, the division of Universal Music Group that includes A&M Records and Island Records, and EMI Music, the music company that includes Virgin Records. It also features one new song, "Make Me," which was specifically recorded for this greatest hits album and was released as its only single.
The album was released as a 36-track collection internationally and a 34-track collection in the United States, where the songs "When I Think of You (David Morales House Mix '95 UK 7" Edit) " and "Whoops Now" were omitted. Due to the time constraint of compact discs, a number of songs on the album were edited down in length from their original versions in order to fit all of the songs onto one disc. On the international versions of the album, some of the songs were shortened even greater so that its two additional songs could fit. In addition, several of the songs have been remixed from their original album versions, however that fact is not indicated in the album's liner notes.
The United States version (Number Ones) and the international version (The Best) both use almost identical album cover artwork, with the only difference being the text of the two different album titles.
The greatest hits album reached #22 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
