NOTES:
janet. is the fifth studio album from Janet Jackson, released on May 18, 1993 by Virgin Records. The theme of the album is sexual intimacy, a subject that the once shy tomboy explores with the public for the first time. Having departed from A&M Records, the album is Janet's first under a new unprecedented, multi-million dollar contract with Virgin Records.
The album's title, Janet's first name in all lowercase letters followed by a period, is meant to disassociate herself from the rest of the Jackson family and express her self-identity by dropping her surname. Janet took even more creative control with this album than on any of her previous ones, sharing co-writing and producing credits with collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and also Jellybean Johnson. When conceiving the album, she drew inspiration from the character she played in the film Poetic Justice, which she had filmed immediately prior to creating this project. She credited the film with changing her perception of sexuality. The album's release gives Janet a newfound sexual persona.
Guests on the album include opera singer Kathleen Battle ("This Time"), and rapper Chuck D ("New Agenda").
The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with the largest first week sales in history for a female artist at the time with 350,000 units sold in its first week. Six of its singles reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. It has been certified six-times platinum by the RIAA. The album has sold over seven million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Janet supported the album with her second concert tour, the janet. Tour.
The hidden track "Whoops Now," which appears following an eighteen-second gap of silence after the interlude "Sweet Dreams," appears on most versions of the album, however it was excluded on some cassette and vinyl versions. On some international editions of the CD, the song is included as its own separate track.
A limited edition 2-CD version of the album housed in a 6x10" hardcover forty-page booklet, was released in the United States and United Kingdom. The first disc is the normal version of the album, and the bonus disc includes eight tracks of live songs, remixes, alternate versions, and the b-side "One More Chance."
Another limited edition 2-CD version of the album was also released in Australia to coincide with the arrival in that country of her concert tour. This "Oz Tour Limited Edition" contains a five-track bonus disc of remixes and three b-sides.
SINGLES RELEASED:
"That's The Way Love Goes," "If," "Again," "Because Of Love," "Any Time, Any Place," "Throb," "You Want This," "What'll I Do," and "Whoops Now."
