NOTES: Discipline is the tenth studio album from Janet Jackson, released on February 26, 2008 by Island Records. The album was executive produced by Janet and hip-hop producer and rapper Jermaine Dupri, who was also her boyfriend at the time. It was her first album released by Island Records. Antonio "L.A." Reid, chairman and CEO of the Island Def Jam Music Group, was responsible for signing Janet to the record label and supervised the production of the album.
Janet worked with a variety of producers on the album, including Rodney Jerkins, Jermaine Dupri, Ne-Yo, Shea Taylor, Stargate, Johnta Austin, Tricky Stewart, and The-Dream. Notably absent from the album are Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, her longtime collaborators who had contributed heavily to every album she had released since 1986's Control up until this point. Janet did not write or co-write any of the album's songs, a departure from her normal practice.
Discipline was released using two different album covers in different territories. In the United States, the album's cover image only says Janet's first name, and in all other countries internationally the cover image says both her first and last names.
The album reached #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It is certified gold by the RIAA and has sold just under 500,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Janet supported the album with her fifth concert tour, the Rock Witchu Tour, her first in seven years.
On September 22, 2008, while in the middle of her tour and just seven months after Discipline was released, a representative for Janet issued a statement announcing that Janet had dissolved her relationship with Island Records and would no longer be working with the label. She explained in several interviews that while making the album, executives at the label had pressured her to record slower soul and jazz music, similar to that of Sade, however she relented and continued to record her signature up-tempo dance music. She also expressed her displeasure with the company for ending all promotion of the album after the release of its first single, "Feedback."
A "Deluxe Edition" of the album was released worldwide on the same day as the standard edition. It contained a bonus DVD that features behind-the-scenes footage of photo shoots, the recording the album, dance rehearsals, the making of the "Feedback" music video, and the "Feedback" music video itself.
The Japanese version of the album contains the bonus tracks "Let Me Know " and "Feedback (Ralphi Rosario Electro Shock Radio Edit)."
SINGLES RELEASED:
"Feedback," "Rock With U ," "Luv," and "Can't B Good ."
