NOTES: Design of a Decade 1986/1996 is the first greatest hits album from Janet Jackson, released on October 10, 1995 by A&M Records.
The collection features a compilation of songs from her albums Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, and janet., and also features two new songs, "Runaway" and "Twenty Foreplay," both of which were specifically recorded for this greatest hits album. Because the album was released by A&M Records, only one song from the janet. album, a Virgin Records release, was included due to licensing difficulties (two songs on the international version).
The album was released as an 18-track disc internationally and a 16-track disc in the United States, where the songs "The Best Things in Life Are Free" and "Whoops Now" were omitted. Due to the time constraint of compact discs, a number of songs on the album were edited down in length from their original versions in order to fit all of the songs onto one disc. On the international versions of the album, some of the songs were shortened even greater so that its two additional songs could fit. In addition, several of the songs have been remixed from their original album versions, however that fact is not indicated in the album's liner notes.
The album was released using three separate album covers in different territories - the United States, Japan, and the rest of the international community.
A limited edition 2-CD version of the album was released in Europe, which contains a seven-track bonus disc of remixes and songs, including ones from her first two albums Janet Jackson and Dream Street. This second disc was also sold as its own separate commercial release in Australia.
Another limited edition version was also released in Europe and contained the single disc version of the album inside of a metal tin case.
In addition to the album's two new songs that were both released as singles, A&M Records re-released the singles "The Best Things in Life Are Free," "When I Think of You," "Alright," and "The Pleasure Principle" with brand new remixes.
The greatest hits album reached #3 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It has been certified two-times platinum by the RIAA, and has sold over 2.4 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
