A new song on the upcoming "Damita Jo" album will be titled "Ruff," according to a Jam! Music article.
Toronto producer/mixer/composer Dave Hodge contributed programming to the song. While working at Village Studios in Los Angeles, Hodge was approached by Jimmy Jam who had been working on the new track with Terry Lewis.
"Because of the community [at the recording studio], Jimmy drops in every now and then. He popped in and said, 'Do you want to do some programming on this track?' There's only really one answer to that one," recounts Hodge, adding that the main synth riff of "Ruff" was provided by production team The Neptunes. "They were basically looking for specific drum feel, and one of the engineers recommended he talk to me." |

Janet withdraws from Lena Horne biopic, producers stick by her
The following article comes from Variety.com:
Lena Horne zaps Janet; Jackson barred from biopic
By Michael Fleming, Josepf Adalian
Variety.com | February 23, 2004
In the latest ripple caused by Janet Jackson's Super Bowl exposure, the singer has abruptly withdrawn from an ABC biopic about Lena Horne -- putting the project in limbo.
Storyline Entertainment partners Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have ankled as exec producers in solidarity with Jackson, who was due to play Horne.
A spokeswoman for Jackson said she was effectively dis-invited from the movie by Horne and her daughter Gail Lumet Buckley, who were incensed when Jackson flashed during the halftime show. Horne refused to return her contract for the pic until ABC guaranteed that Jackson was off the project, which is being produced by Storyline and Sony Pictures Television. ABC execs refused Horne's demand, but the issue has become moot with the reaction of Jackson, Zadan and Meron.
Alphabet insiders said the project is now up in the air; barring another superstar casting, however, it's unlikely to move forward.
"It's sad this had to happen. It was a perfect match," one ABC insider said.
The Super Bowl stunt has had far reaching implications. The FCC is investigating, and broadcasters have in turn tightened the screws to eliminate the chance of another unscripted surprise that could shock and offend mass audiences.
Stormy weather was rumored to be brewing over the ABC biopic early last week, as word surfaced that Horne's displeasure hadn't abated. At the time, it was hoped that the singers would meet and that the duet would end harmoniously. But Horne refused to meet with Jackson.
Jackson looked at the movie as a prestigious way to jumpstart her acting career, which has included roles in 1970s sitcom "Good Times" and John Singleton's "Poetic Justice." She was recently photographed as Horne in a glamorous Vanity Fair layout.
Zadan and Meron left the project right after Jackson, and a spokeswoman for the producers said they would concentrate on finding another project to do with the singer.
It's not surprising they stuck by Jackson. While ABC already had optioned a Horne bio, it wasn't until Jackson approached the producers that the project became a film on the fast track.
Jackson signed to play the elegant singer who broke racial barriers, and she also planned to re-record some of Horne's classic songs.
"She is someone I've admired my whole life," Jackson said of Horne when the project was greenlit last fall.
Roy Campanella Jr. was set to direct Shirley Pierce's script based on "Lena," the autobiography the singer wrote with Richard Schickel. |

...But you can't talk about the Super Bowl without talking about Ms. Jackson. I'm not going to focus on her breast like the rest of y'all. I'm about the music. Janet a no-show at Grammys, Justin apologizes
As her publicist had previously announced, Janet did not attend last night's Grammy Awards ceremony.
On Sunday, Janet's public relations firm released a statement saying CBS and Grammy officials had asked her not to attend, the Associated Press is reporting. They reversed themselves Saturday and invited her back, but she declined, the statement said.
A representative for the Grammys denied she was ever unwelcome. "Janet was always invited," said Jason Padgitt of the publicity firm Rogers & Cowan, which represents the Recording Academy. "She was never uninvited, she was always invited to be here and she chose not to be."
Justin Timberlake, on the other hand, was present at the ceremony and bowed to pressure from CBS by apologizing during his acceptance speech for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
"I know it's been a rough week on everybody," Timberlake said in his speech. "And what occurred was unintentional, completely regrettable and I apologize if you guys were offended."
CBS, which televised both the Grammys and the Super Bowl, had insisted that Janet and Justin apologize on air as a condition for appearing at the annual awards show as planned. The network released the following statement last night regarding their invitations to the ceremony:
CBS Statement Regarding Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's Participation in 'The 46th Annual Grammy Awards' Sunday February 8, 10:17 pm ET
NEW YORK, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Throughout the week, CBS and The Recording Academy have been evaluating and deliberating the appropriateness of Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake appearing at "The 46th Annual Grammy Awards." CBS had serious reservations about their scheduled appearances; however, we respected the Recording Academy's wishes to produce the program they originally intended. Ms. Jackson and Mr. Timberlake were invited to participate in the show as long as they agreed to apologize on the air for what happened during our Network's broadcast of the "Super Bowl Halftime Show." Ms. Jackson declined the invitation. Mr. Timberlake accepted. |

Billboard's review of 'Just A Little While'
The following review of "Just A Little While" appears in the February 14 issue of Billboard Magazine:
"Just A Little While"
Producer(s): Dallas Austin

Label/Catalog Number: Virgin 7243-5-48435-5-6 (CD promo)

Originally Reviewed: February 14, 2004
Janet Jackson knows how to make a great single. Her latest, "Just a Little While," is another immediate radio hit. The track was leaked to the Internet at the end of January, and while Virgin maintains it did not choose it as the lead single (from the artist's new album), there isn't any reason why "Just a Little While" won't be a smash. The song is supported by guitars reminiscent of "Dirty Mind"-era Prince, new wave synths and the kind of swirling musicality that could garner it multiformat success. In signature fashion, Jackson crafts lyrics that are innocent on the surface yet naughty upon closer inspection. Yes, Miss Jackson is talking about sex, plain and simple. This is the first preview of the artist's eighth studio album, "Damita Jo," due March 30. -KC

Jermaine Dupri stands up for Janet, resigns Grammy post
Upset over what he considers the unfair treatment of Janet by NARAS, the group that distributes the Grammy awards, Jermaine Dupri announced at a press conference Friday that he was resigning as president of the group's Atlanta chapter, the Associated Press is reporting.
"I didn't want to be a part of something that's not treating people in the right light," Dupri said. "I feel like what's going on with Janet is unfair."
Dupri, 31, said he wasn't sure whether NARAS or CBS was behind the decision to remove Janet from the Grammy lineup, but he doesn't want to have any part of it.
"I'm washing my hands of the whole situation," Dupri said.
Asked if he and Janet planned to attend the Grammys since their names were still on the official Grammy guest list, he said, "As far as I know, no."
He did say he had no prior knowledge of the Super Bowl stunt and noted Janet was doing fine despite the fallout from the performance.
"She's good," he said. "Everyone else is making this bigger than what it is." |

"He's moved on. They are trying to put a record together. We talked about it yesterday," Lisa Harris said. "All that's going on is that they have moved on to getting her album ['Damita Jo'] together, which they've been doing for months. They are not obsessing about it. They are working." |

Janet's presence at Grammy ceremony still uncertain
According to a spokesperson for Luther Vandross, rumors that the Vandross family had asked Janet to recuse herself from Luther's Grammy tribute are untrue, Access Hollywood is reporting.
"The rumor that Luther Vandross' family has asked Janet Jackson to pull out of his Grammy tribute is completely inaccurate," his spokesperson said in a statement. "The Vandross family has not made any such request and ask that Luther's tribute be left out of the Janet Jackson issue out of respect for him and his family."
Janet was slated to be the presenter for the Vandross tribute at the Grammy ceremony on Sunday, however rumors that she has been banned have called her presense into question.
Grammy officials are now claiming that Janet will indeed make an appearance at the ceremony, according to the latest Access Hollywood report. However, in light of the breast-baring incident, Janet's role in the show may have changed. |

Janet becomes the most searched internet event ever
Janet has made internet history. According to the Lycos 50 Daily Report, Janet's revealing moment this weekend became the most searched item in the history of the internet.
"On Monday, Janet Jackson and the halftime show received 60 times as many searches as the Paris Hilton sex tape and 80 times as many searches as Britney Spears. Jackson was searched 50 times for every request for the topic that normally dominates on the day after the game, Super Bowl commercials. She also received 275 times as many searches as the streaker who ran on the field before the second half, and 350 times as many searches as Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady."
Shockingly, Janet's performance was even more intensely searched than the previous high event, September 11, 2001. |

Janet, Justin still scheduled to appear at Grammy Awards
Janet and Justin Timberlake will appear on Sunday's Grammy Awards as planned despite the uproar over their Super Bowl halftime show performance, the host of the Grammys said Tuesday, according to Reuters.
In a show of caution, however, CBS said it would air the Grammys with a longer tape-delay so that network censors could edit any crude language or behavior from the telecast. The network said the length of the delay, which will let it delete audio and video, has yet to be determined.
"Janet is still scheduled to be a presenter and Justin is still scheduled to be a performer," said Ron Roecker, a spokesman for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, which will present the 46th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
The ceremony will air live on CBS on Sunday, February 8, at 8:00 P.M. EST. |

MTV: We got 'Punk'd' by Janet
Tom Freston, the chairman and CEO of MTV Networks, said Tuesday neither his company nor CBS knew of plans for the bodice-ripping incident during the Super Bowl halftime show, the Associated Press is reporting.
"We were really ripped off. We were punk'd by Janet Jackson," Freston, referring to MTV's reality show that makes celebrities the butt of practical jokes, said at a previously scheduled panel discussion.
Freston said Timberlake was informed of the stunt just moments before he took the stage with Janet, Reuters reports.
"When you're doing live television ... there's a great reliance and trust you have to put in the performers," Freston said in an interview after the panel talk. "And our trust was violated by the performer."
"Janet Jackson isn't the type of person you would think would be doing that," Freston said. "So yes, we were surprised, but such is the nature of what live TV can be."
Freston said in the interview that he welcomed the Federal Communications Commission's decision to investigate the matter, which he said would prove that the show's producers and broadcasters had no prior knowledge of Jackson's plans.
As for avoiding such missteps in the future, Freston said: "I suppose we'll be more on our toes about getting punk'd, as it were. ... We clearly know the difference between late night on MTV and the Super Bowl halftime show." |
