Many changes on the second leg of the All For You Tour
As was common on all of Janet's previous tours, there are a bunch of changes that exist on the second leg of the All For You Tour. We have attempted to list a few:
- The platforms that each band member performs on do not move up and down on hydraulics as they had previously done. They are on brand new platforms that still roll forward, however remain vertically stationary and are about two feet taller than the ones used on the first leg.
- Since the band members' platforms no longer move up and down, all of the stage equipment is now rolled out of the sides of the stage. On the previous leg, equipment emerged from inside of each band member's "hole" as they were lifted up on their platforms.
- The set of tall metal stairs that appeared during several songs and connected to the band members' platforms as they were lifted up no longer appear on the tour. The stairs have been replaced by a shorter set of stairs that are not as tall.
- The big metal cage that covered the top and sides of the stage during "If", "Black Cat", and "Rhythm Nation" are no longer present. The neon-lighted Chinese symbols remain as part of the backdrop, however the metal cage that once was in front of them is gone.
- There are no pyrotechnics
- Although Janet had worn a new gray outfit for "Would You Mind" at the Japanese concerts, she has gone back to wearing the shiny black vinyl outfit that she had worn at all of the previous US shows. The performance of the song is more sexual and risqué than it had previously been as Janet directly grabs and rubs her "victim" in more intimate areas than she used to.
- Stacey Campbell, one of the background singers on the first leg, is no longer on the tour and has been replaced. The reason why Stacey left is unknown.
Aside from the actual show, some of the tour merchandise is different as well:
- Two pages of the tourbook are different. The Jaguar advertisement is no longer present and has been replaced by a picture of Janet performing "Son of a Gun" on the previous leg. The MSN advertisement has been replaced by a picture of Janet performing "You Ain't Right".
- There is a new t-shirt with the same picture that was used as the cover of the limited edition "All For You" CD & DVD set.
- There is a new hooded sweatshirt with a silhouette of Janet performing "Come On Get Up" on the front.
Although all of these changes exist on the new US tour dates, the upcoming Hawaii concert that is being filmed for HBO will most likely remain similar to the concerts on the first leg with full stage equipment. |

Janet speaks to journalists in Japan
The following article and photographs were taken from Reuters:
Janet Jackson Seeks Love Without Wedding Bells By Stuart Grudgings
TOKYO (Reuters) - Wanted: One boyfriend for a woman branded sexier than Madonna, with more earning power than even most mega-stars can dream of and who even has a reputation for being normal -- not bad when you consider who her siblings are.
A messy divorce battle has left Janet Jackson in need of one of the few assets she doesn't already have, and she revealed on Thursday to a packed house of journalists and admirers in Tokyo that she is missing it dearly.
``I'd like to be in love,'' the diminutive pop diva said upon being asked if there was anything still missing in her glittering life. ``I don't want to get married, though,'' she pointedly added.
The 35-year-old is in Japan for the next leg of her world tour, disrupted by the September 11 attacks, and was fresh from news Wednesday that she had won the award for favorite female pop/rock artist at the American Music awards in Los Angeles.
Her spectacular success, which has brought her a reported $80 million recording deal with Virgin Records to make her the highest paid recording artist ever, has been matched only by the instability of her personal life.
She has one marriage already behind her and another firmly on the rocks after a fallout with husband Rene Elizondo, and a new raunchy image -- she prefers to call it ``sensuous'' -- has also courted controversy in some quarters.
``It has its moments in the show and I guess as I've got older I've become more expressive to that side of my life...but for the most part it's a fun, up show,'' she said.
In recent shows, she has strapped lucky male members of the audience to a gurney and simulated a lap dance.
Her latest album ``All for You,'' which shocked some of her long-term fans with its sexually explicit lyrics, has even been banned by the authorities in Singapore -- a key measure of cool for any artist.
``I wish it wasn't censored, but unfortunately they have been,'' said Jackson, clad in a clinging, black outfit. ``I can't imagine changing it because that's the way it was written, that's the way I wanted it to be. It's speaking from my heart.''
FULL CIRCLE
Jackson has come a long way since the 1970s when she debuted as a cute kid alongside her talented brothers, including Michael, as part of the Jackson Five, and since her career appeared to be floundering in the late 1980s.
But not content with the enviable reputation combining critical acclaim and popular success that she has since earned, Jackson said Thursday she wanted to return to one of her first loves, acting.
``I'd like to go home and study acting... Touring is incredibly grueling and I don't like the fact that you're out for so long, as long as 10 months,'' she said.
Jackson is already an accomplished actress, having appeared in hit U.S. TV shows ``Different Strokes'' and ``Fame'' in her youth, and Thursday named Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg as two directors she dreams of working with.
``It's pretty tough because people do see me as a singer even though I did start out doing films. That crossover is a difficult thing for singers.''
Asked the secret of her success by an audience at Tokyo's Foreign Correspondents Club that far outstripped the usual attendance for visiting dignitaries, Jackson said it may be due to the perception that she was more down to earth than the rest of her famous family.
Older brother Michael has long been as famous for his bizarre personal peccadilloes as for his music, while sister Latoya's antics have included appearing nude in Playboy magazine and writing a scandalous book about the family.
``I think people feel some sort of connection with which they can relate. It's always been kind of silly to me but I've been called the normal Jackson....I think there's a normalcy they feel, even though I did grow up differently from most people and being so young when my brothers started in the business.'' |

Entertainment Design profiles the All For You Tour costumes
Entertainment Design, a popular US magazine geared to arts & entertainment industry insiders, has profiled the costumes designed for Janet's All For You Tour in the January 2002 edition of its monthly magazine.
Inside are images of six costume renderings (four from "Trust A Try"; two from the whimsical section) as well as a short interview with the tour's clothing designer, Frank Krenz.
'Dressing Ms. Jackson' - Catherine McHugh for Entertainment Design Magazine
Janet Jackson is such a slave to fashion that she had the program for her latest tour created to look like a glossy fashion magazine, complete with 'ads' such as JJNY (Janet Jeans New York), and Janet's Secret. But for the more theatrical costume looks on her All For You tour, the performer worked with New York-based costume designer Frank Krenz.
"For the sort of dark section of the show, she wanted these Oriental, porcelain masks," Krenz says. "They have removable jaws that can be manipulated by the dancers and would also stay on their heads during rather violent rock-and-roll-numbers. They're built on a substructure with pieces of the masks riveted to them--and then we made the rivets into decorative parts to add to the eeriness of them. Oddly enough, one of her inspirations was the Terry Gilliam movie, The Adventures of Baron Von Muncahusen."
Jackson's inspiration for the show's whimsical section as she called it, came from Krenz's own portfolio. "There was this whole strange kabuki section [in the show] and then very opposite." he explains. "She wanted a moonlit magical forest that turns into enchanted daytime for a medley of four of her songs: Escapade, Miss You Much, When I Think Of You, and Runaway. We went through all of the fantastical outfits that I had done for 100 different shows, and she pointed out what she liked here and there and we created the costumes for her and her dancers from there. In a way, it was like shopping through my portfolio and putting looks together." |
